Change Management

Inevitably, companies change over time. Organisations go through stages of growth that require changes to be made to the structure, the functions within the organisation, the processes used, and of course the strategy.

Sometimes, however, change is forced on an organisation, perhaps through circumstances or outside forces, or because the inevitable change has been put off for too long.

Even gradual change over time can be difficult to manage and implement and many managers and directors find change threatening.

The common factors in all change circumstances are uncertainty and fear, which have to be minimised and dealt with.

When sudden change is required, it is best - in fact imperative - to get somebody in who is detached from the organisation and experienced in change management, to identify and then to implement the necessary actions.

This is for a number of very good reasons:

  • Identifying and implementing lasting, meaningful change especially sudden and what might be dramatic change, is extremely difficult for those within the organisation, who are too close to the organisation, the situation and the staff.
  • Managers may not have experience of implementing lasting change in organisations.
  • Implementing change is extremely difficult, and this is just when outside, experienced help can be most valuable.
  • It also needs to be planned very carefully, to ensure that the effects are what are required and do not lead to further problems, perhaps later.
